Undine

To gain a human soul, a water spirit must learn what it means to love—and what it costs to be betrayed.

When the knight Huldbrand ventures into a mysterious forest, he finds shelter with an elderly fisherman and his wife. There he meets Undine, their beautiful and unpredictable foster daughter, whose enchanting nature conceals an extraordinary secret.

Undine is a spirit of the water. Though she can feel desire, wonder, and affection, she possesses no immortal soul. Only by marrying a mortal can she become fully human. Drawn together by forces neither completely understands, Undine and Huldbrand marry, and her transformation begins.

But happiness proves fragile. As the couple returns to Huldbrand’s former life, the presence of the noblewoman Bertalda awakens old attachments, jealousy, and doubt. Huldbrand’s growing coldness toward his devoted wife places their marriage—and his life—under the shadow of an ancient supernatural law.

Blending German folklore, medieval romance, and haunting tragedy, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué’s *Undine* is a timeless tale of love, sacrifice, identity, and the longing to possess a human soul.

Beautiful, atmospheric, and deeply sorrowful, this classic fairy tale has inspired generations of writers, artists, composers, and storytellers.
