Epic of Tamil Literature Manimekalai's Aaputhiran Story

Manimekalai, is a Tamil-Buddhist epic composed by Kulavanikan Seethalai Satanar probably around the 6th century. It is an "anti-love story", a sequel to the "love story" in the earliest Tamil epic Silappadikaram, with some characters from it and their next generation. The epic consists of 4,861 lines in akaval meter, arranged in 30 cantos. Manimekalai learns the story of Aaputhiran – the first possessor of the magic bowl, and the Brahmin Abhanjika of Benares where Abhanjika taught the Vedas. A boy named Aaputhiran is accused of stealing a cow, and the cows protect the boy by fighting Abhanjika and other Brahmins, killing one of the Brahmins. Aaputhiran then meets and accuses the Brahmins of twisting the meaning of the Veda verses taught by Brahma born from the navel of Vishnu who holds a golden disc as his weapon. Aaputhiran reminds the Brahmins that the greatest Vedic teachers such as Vasishtha and Agastya were born of low birth. Aaputhiran is labeled as a cow-thief, and his begging bowl is filled with stones when he does his rounds. Aaputhiran leaves the city and reaches Madurai. மணிமேகலை ஐம்பெரும் தமிழ்க் காப்பியங்களுள் ஒன்று. இக்காப்பியத்தை இயற்றியவர் சீத்தலைச் சாத்தனார். மணிமேகலை காப்பியத்தில் அடி இணையும், அதன் வழிபாடும், வேறு கடவுள்களின் வழிபாடும் இருக்கும் நிலையில், அஃது ஒரு மகாயான காப்பியமாகவே இருக்கமுடியும். மேலும், மகாயான பௌத்தமானது இல்லறத்தையும், துறவறத்தையும் வலியுறுத்தும் நிலையிலும், சிலப்பதிகாரமானது இல்லறத்தையும், மணிமேகலை காப்பியம் துறவறத்தையும் வலியுறுத்துவதாலும், இவை இரட்டைக் காப்பியங்கள் ஆகும். சிலப்பதிகாரத்திற்கு அடுத்ததாக இலக்கிய அழகில் பெருமைவாய்ந்த மணிமேகலை, ஐம்பெரும் தமிழ் காப்பியங்களுள் ஒன்றாகும். இக்காப்பியத்தின் தலைவி, மணிமேகலை, சிலப்பதிகாரத்தின் கோவலன் மற்றும் மாதவி என்பவர்களின் மகளாவாள். கோவலனின் துயர மரணத்திற்குப் பிறகு மாதவி தன் மகளை ஒரு புத்தத் துறவியாக வளர்த்தாள். ஒரு சமயத்தில் மணிமேகலையும் அவளுடைய தோழியும் உவவனத்திற்குப் பூப்பறிக்கச் சென்றிருந்தபோது, உதயகுமரன் என்ற சோழ மன்னன் மணிமேகலையின் மீது காதல் மயக்கம் கொண்டான். கடலின் கடவுளான மணிமேகலா, மணிமேகலையின் உலக இன்பங்கள் துறந்த வாழ்க்கையைப் பாதுகாக்க, அவளை தான் அறியாமலே மணிபல்லவம் என்ற தீவில் கொண்டு விட்டாள். அத்தீவில் மணிமேகலை ஒரு புத்த பீடிகை மூலம் தனது முன்பிறப்பைப் பற்றி அறிந்தாள். ஆபுத்திரன் கதை மணிமேகலை என்னும் நூலில் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. அத்தைகைய ஆபுத்திரன் கதை பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு.ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார்.
