Nalayira Divya Prabandham

Mr. G.Gnanasambandan explains about Nalayira Divya Prabandham in this audio. The Nalayira Divya Prabandham is a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses (Naalayiram in Tamil means 'four thousand') composed by the 12 Alvars. It was compiled in its present form by Nathamuni during the 9th – 10th centuries. The work, an important liturgical compilation of the Tamil Alvars, marks the beginning of the canonization of 12 Vaishnava poet saints, and these hymns are still sung extensively today. The works were lost before they were collected and organized in the form of an anthology by Nathamuni. The Divya Prabandham sings the praise of Narayana and his many forms. The Alvars sang these songs at various sacred shrines known as the Divya Desams. In many temples — Srirangam, for example — the chanting of the Divya Prabandham forms a major part of the daily service. It's also recited in some North Indian Vaishnavite temples, such as Badrinath. The Divya Prabandham is recited along with the Vedas,and it is given equal status to the Vedas, largely due to the efforts of Ramanuja who enshrined the Divya Prabandham on the same pedestal as the Vedas.

நாலாயிர திவ்விய பிரபந்தம் பெருமாளைக் குறித்துப் பாடப்பட்ட பக்தி பாடல் தொகுப்பாகும். இஃது இந்து மதத்தில் வைணவ சமயத்தின் ஓர் ஆதாரமாக, தமிழ்மறையாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. கி.பி. 6-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு முதல் 9-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுக்குள் வைணவ சமயத்தில் ஆழ்வார்கள் 12 பேரினால் இயற்றப்பட்ட இந்தப் பாடல்களை, 10-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த நாதமுனிகள் என்பார் ஆழ்வார்கள் அருளிச் செயல்கள் எனத் தொகுத்தார். பின்னர் வந்த மணவாளமாமுனிகள், நாதமுனிகள் தொகுத்த ஆழ்வார்களின் பிரபந்தத்தோடு, திருவரங்கத்தமுதனார் செய்த இராமானுச நூற்றந்தாதியும் சேர்த்து நாலாயிர திவ்வியப் பிரபந்தம் என அழைக்கும்படி அருளினார். திவ்ய எனும் சொல் "மேலான" என்றும் பிரபந்தம் எனும் சொல் பலவகைபாடல் தொகுப்பினையும் குறிக்கும். இந்த நூல் - ஆன்ற தமிழ் மறை, ஐந்தாவது வேதம், திராவிட வேதம், திராவிட பிரபந்தம் என்றெல்லாம் வர்ணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தமிழ் பேசும் வைணவர்கள் மட்டுமல்லாது தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம் பேசும் வைணவர்களாலும் இன்றும் தினமும் படிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது என்பது இதன் சிறப்பு. பெருமைமிகுந்த நாலாயிர திவ்விய பிரபந்தம் பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார்.
