Thomas Paine was a political activist, theorist, political theorist, and revolutionary who was born in England. He wrote 2 of the most popular handouts at the beginning of the American Revolution, Common Sense (1776) and The American Crisis (1776-- 1783) and helped motivate patriots to announce independence from Great Britain in 1776.
