Hannibal by Jacob Abbott is an accessible, 19th-century historical biography that chronicles the life of the legendary Carthaginian general. Originally published in 1849 as part of the Makers of History series, the book explores his epic military campaigns, the famous crossing of the Alps with war elephants, and his intense rivalry with Rome. Key Highlights: Plot & Content: The biography details Hannibal's early life, his oath of vengeance against Rome, and his sweeping victories during the Second Punic War (such as the Battle of Cannae). It concludes with his eventual defeat at Zama, his exile, and his life's end. Writing Style: Written in plain, simple, and dramatic prose, Abbott aimed to make ancient history accessible to the general public and young adults. Historical Context: While romanticized in its narrative style, the book provides a strong foundational look at the clash between the Roman Republic and Carthage.
