Hieroglyphics

Hieroglyphics by Arthur Machen is a brilliant and provocative meditation on the nature of art and the mystical essence of literature. In this fascinating and unconventional critical work, Machen proposes that the highest form of literature transcends mere storytelling to evoke ecstasy, wonder, and the ineffable—qualities he refers to as the "ecstatic element" of art. Through a passionate and often poetic argument, Machen champions the imaginative and spiritual dimensions of literature, rejecting the mechanical and overly intellectual approaches of contemporary criticism. First published in the early 20th century, Hieroglyphics is a bold and visionary inquiry into what makes writing truly powerful. Machen explores a wide range of authors and genres—from Shakespeare to Dickens, from fantasy to realism—asserting that true literature must awaken a sense of mystery and awe in the reader. This book is an essential read for writers, readers, and thinkers who believe that literature is more than information or entertainment—that it is a portal to the sublime. Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was a Welsh author and mystic celebrated for his works of horror, fantasy, and supernatural fiction. He is best known for classic stories such as The Great God Pan and The White People, which have influenced generations of writers including H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. Deeply fascinated by the occult, Christian mysticism, and the hidden layers of reality, Machen infused his writings with symbolic depth and spiritual resonance. Hieroglyphics reveals another side of Machen—as a literary philosopher and passionate defender of the mystical core of great art.
