William Ernest Henley’s “Invictus” speaks from within suffering rather than about it from a distance. The poem does not describe pain in detail, yet its presence is constant, shaping the speaker’s outlook and resolve. Darkness, chance, and punishment are acknowledged as real forces, but they are not granted authority over the speaker’s inner life. The poem’s strength lies in its quiet refusal to be inwardly defeated.
