Passing

Nella Larsen’s Passing is a powerful novel of identity, race, friendship, and social expectations in 1920s Harlem. Irene Redfield leads a comfortable life within the Black middle class, but her world is unsettled when she unexpectedly encounters Clare Kendry, a childhood acquaintance who is living as a white woman.

Clare has crossed the racial boundary known as “passing,” concealing her Black heritage from her white husband and entering a society that would otherwise exclude her. Drawn to the freedom and privilege Clare’s new life provides, Irene is simultaneously fascinated, uneasy, and increasingly concerned by the risks Clare is taking.

As the two women’s lives become intertwined, Larsen explores the pressures of identity, marriage, class, desire, and belonging. Their friendship grows increasingly complicated as secrets and conflicting loyalties emerge, leading toward an ambiguous and unsettling climax. First published in 1929, Passing is a concise yet psychologically rich work of American literature that examines the ways people construct identity and the consequences of living between worlds.
