#1 I had a favorite Sunday school teacher, Miss Jean, who would always tell me that Jesus loved me. She would put up a picture of Jesus surrounded by children, and say, Jesus loves little children. He will always be your friend.

#2 The Bible describes God as a friend to Israel, and Christians have long believed that Jesus is God’s friend. The New Testament vividly recounts the closeness of Jesus’s circle of friends, women and men transformed through their relationship with him.

#3 I had one close childhood friend who moved to Ohio shortly before kindergarten. Otherwise, I was a fairly isolated girl. I played alone in the wooded lot across the street from my house, acting out fairy tales and Bible stories.

#4 I had a very open mind when it came to religion. I loved the Bible, and I loved Jesus. I thought they were one and the same. I was three when I first had the idea that Jesus might be a Communist.
