#1 In 2001, I was CEO of Whole Foods Market, and I was being interviewed as part of an investigation into who should lead the company into the future. I was asked to step aside and make way for a new leader.

#2 The saga of WholePeople. com, which ultimately failed, is its own story. I had co-founded and built Whole Foods from the ground up, but I owned a relatively minor percentage of shares. I was shocked by the turn of events, but I still hoped I could convince the board that I was the right person to continue to lead the company.

#3 The Whole Foods debacle was a wake-up call for me. I had to evolve as a leader, and I realized that I wasn’t just facing an external challenge but an internal one as well. I had shied away from being the confident and conscious leader the company needed.

#4 The journey of conscious leadership is a journey of development. It means stepping up to a much higher level of integrity and responsibility. It is a tribute to the morning light that can shine for us all if we have the right attitude and approach to leadership.
