कश्चन बौद्धभिक्षुः उत्तमः कलाकारः सन् बौद्धालयस्य निर्माणविन्यासं करोति स्म । भवनं द्रष्टुम् आगतेन केनचन निरुद्योगिना मुख्यप्रवेशद्वारस्य विन्यासरचनसमये शताधिकानि चित्राणि रचितानि चेदपि सर्वत्र दोषः दृश्यते स्म । कदाचित् एकाकिना भिक्षुणा उपविश्य विन्यासः रचितः । 'अल्पे एव काले अद्भुतं चित्रं कथं रचितं भवता?’ इति पृष्टे भिक्षुः अवदत् 'यावत् अन्यस्य प्रीत्यर्थं कार्यं क्रियते, तावत् अस्माकं कार्यं श्रेष्ठं न भवति । आत्मसन्तोषार्थं कृतं कार्यं भवति श्रेष्ठम्' इति । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

A Buddhist monk, who was an excellent artist was designing the layout of a Buddhist temple. A visitor, who was unemployed, saw over a hundred drawings created during the design of the main entrance, yet found faults in all of them. One day, the monk sat alone and created the drwaing. When asked, ‘How did you create such a wonderful drawing in such a short time?’ the monk replied, ‘As long as we do work to please others, our work is not the best. The work done for self-satisfaction is the best’.
