The protagonist is an FBI agent with triple citizenship of the US, France, and Germany that enables her to investigate cross-border crimes in these countries. The plot begins on a saddened note, where the protagonist's dream to marry the love of her life is shattered due to her alleged obsession with her work. However, she is soon on a case where a serial killer is on the loose, who kills his victims based on the descending number of their age. As she closes on the killer in the US, he escapes to France and strikes his next victim there. Adele's unique citizenship aids in her deputation to France to nab the killer, where she is in touch with her formal employer. Once again as she closes in on this diabolical killer, following a failed attempt, he slips to Germany. She follows him there and with the co-operation of the intelligence task forces of France and Germany, she has the perpetrator just as he is about to take down his next victim. An interesting read with some light moments.
