Vivid and compelling in its portrait of one woman’s struggle for fulfillment in a society pivoting between the traditional and the modern, The Henna Artist opens a door into a world that is at once lush and fascinating, stark and cruel.
Escaping from an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi makes her way alone to the vibrant 1950s pink city of Jaipur. There she becomes the most highly requested henna artist—and confidante—to the wealthy women of the upper class. But trusted with the secrets of the wealthy, she can never reveal her own…
Known for her original designs and sage advice, Lakshmi must tread carefully to avoid the jealous gossips who could ruin her reputation and her livelihood. As she pursues her dream of an independent life, she is startled one day when she is confronted by her husband, who has tracked her down these many years later with a high-spirited young girl in tow—a sister Lakshmi never knew she had. Suddenly the caution that she has carefully cultivated as protection is threatened. Still she perseveres, applying her talents and lifting up those that surround her as she does.
“Eloquent and moving…Joshi masterfully balances a yearning for self-discovery with the need for familial love.”—Publishers Weekly

Lakshmi was married at a very young age. From her abusive marriage and started living in Jaipur the pink City. There she became a Henna artist for the wealthy women. Working for wealthy women had some privileges, she had access to their secrets as well as she has many secrets interlined with the lives of the wealthy class. She dreamt of having her own house and an independent life .But her abusive husband tracked her down. There was a girl with him. It was her sister . She never knew that she had a sister. Her sister was born after she ran away from the village. After Radha's arrival, her career faced its peak followed by the doom induced by a rumour spread by others. Radha was facscinated with the life in Jaipur but ended up pregnent at a young age. It invited chaos in lakshmi's life and career. None of the characters are perfect but their lives are intervined. Author shows us emotional sides of the characters. The book beautifully portraits Jaipur in 50's. I am not been to Jaipur a

Listening to ‘The Henna Artist’ by Alka Joshi on @storytel.in A Reese Witherspoon X Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick Lakshmi is a famous heena artist in Jaipur, sought by most upper-class families to apply heena on their hands. However she has dark secrets that no one knows about. What happens when two people from her past surface one day, only to shatter her life and break everything she has created from scratch- her pride and her confidence. I finished the book in a day. Lakshmi’s character is strong and yet she comes across as a pseudo-feminist who cannot tell men that they are wrong. Although she has herself tken some huge decisions in her life that are against societal norms, when it comes to her sister Radha, she wants to ignore the patriarchy around. Overall, the books makes for an intriguing read. Eacha nd every character is detailed, including Madhav, the parakeet! Rated- 4/5 stars
