A journey to a fair becomes a lifetime of exile.

When a fellow merchant is found murdered, Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov is arrested with a bloodstained knife in his luggage. Innocent but unable to prove it, he is torn from his family and condemned to hard labor in Siberia.

Over twenty-six years, the carefree young man becomes an aging prisoner sustained by faith. Then a new convict arrives, and a few careless words reopen the wound that has shaped his life. Faced with an opportunity for revenge, Aksionov must confront the meaning of justice—and the extraordinary cost of forgiveness.

Written by Lyoff Tolstoi and narrated by Mark Zampella, A Long Exile is a moving short story of wrongful conviction, lost years, and the search for peace. This enduring classic of Russian literature explores whether a man deprived of everything can still discover a freedom no prison can take away.
