"A Poor Man's House" is the comical tale of a man who goes on a visit to his friend's house in a poor neighborhood and the discomfort it brings to all involved. Tony Widger, a poor widower, was quite distraught when his only son George had packed up and enlisted in the Navy. He bemoans this event to his friend, who has come over to the Seacombe 'slum' for a visit, wondering how his son's future would look like. Primarily the book aims at presenting a picture of a typical poor man's house and life in the nineteenth century.
