Bobok

Bobok is a thought-provoking satirical short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky that explores the boundaries between life, death, morality, and human vanity. The story follows an unnamed writer who, while visiting a cemetery, imagines overhearing conversations among the recently deceased as they continue to speak from their graves before their final silence. Freed from the conventions of the living, the dead openly confess their secrets, hypocrisies, ambitions, and moral failures, revealing the absurdity and corruption that often shape human behavior. Through these darkly humorous and unsettling exchanges, Dostoevsky offers a sharp critique of society while examining the complexities of conscience, truth, and the human condition.
