Caretaker

When Elias Mercer takes a remote caretaker job at an isolated house on Black Hollow Road, he believes he’s signing up for solitude — not salvation.

The pay is generous. The instructions are simple. Stay on the first and second floors. Do not open doors you didn’t close. Do not answer if you hear your name twice.

At first, the house is only old — breathing walls, locked rooms, mirrors that feel a second too slow. But as night falls, Elias begins to understand the truth: this house does not haunt. It studies. It listens. It learns.

It knows the shape of his regrets. It knows the sound of his loneliness. It knows exactly what he’s hungry for.

And it is keeping score.

When doors begin to open on their own and reflections move without him, Elias discovers that the house doesn’t want his body.

It wants his place.

To escape, he must confront the most dangerous thing in the house — not the shadows in the basement or the figures behind the mirrors, but the version of himself that might choose to stay.

Because in this house, freedom is not given.

It is balanced.

And every debt is paid.
