It Cleans Itself: Why Douching and Perfumed Washes Do Harm

We've been sold a lie: that the vagina needs special cleansers, douches, and perfumed washes to stay clean and fresh. In reality, this multi-million-dollar industry has created a problem it claims to solve. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, equipped with its own microbiome and pH balance that effectively maintain health—when left alone. Douching and fragranced products disrupt this delicate ecosystem, leading to infections, irritation, and even serious reproductive consequences. Drawing on medical consensus, It Cleans Itself explains exactly how these products cause harm, from bacterial vaginosis to pelvic inflammatory disease, and why millions of women have been misled by marketing. This book is a gentle, evidence-based guide to unlearning harmful habits and trusting your body's natural processes. You'll discover what normal discharge looks like, how to tell the difference between a healthy scent and an infection, and the simple, safe alternatives that support vaginal health without risk. Empowering and non-judgmental, It Cleans Itself helps women reclaim their intimate health. Part of The Intimate Health Library.
