Kendrick Lamar, born Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, is a highly acclaimed rapper, songwriter, and filmmaker. He began releasing music as K.Dot in high school and signed with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2005. His second album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, was gangsta rap-influenced and became the longest-charting hip hop studio album in Billboard history. His third album, To Pimp a Butterfly, infused hip-hop with African-American genres and became his first of five consecutive number-one albums. As a child, Lamar was described by his mother as a loner and he lived in Section 8 housing and experienced homelessness while relying on welfare and food stamps. He was raised secular but also was taught the Bible by his grandmother and felt spiritually unsatisfied with the sermons.
