King Solomon's Mines

'It is far. But there is no journey upon this earth that a man may not make if he sets his heart to it.'

One of the first English adventure novels set in Africa – based own Haggard's own experiences travelling the continent – King Solomon's Mines remains a gripping cornerstone of the 'lost world' genre in British literature.

When Allan Quatermain, an adventurer based in Durban, is approached by the devastated Sir Henry Curtis who is looking for his missing brother, Quatermain has no option but to help. Agreeing to lead a search expedition, Quatermain and his crew journey to the mythical King Solomon's Mines, home to hidden treasure according to legend, and the supposed location of Curtis's lost brother. Travelling through unknown terrain, Quatermain and his men navigate perilous climates, fearsome tribes, witch hunts, unexpected rebellions and more. An immediate bestseller at the time of publication in 1885, Haggard's action-packed novel still captivates and delights readers to this day. Henry Rider Haggard (1856 – 1925) was a British novelist. Drawing upon his own experiences working in Africa, Haggard is primarily known for his adventure romances and for being a leading writer of the 'lost world' genre. Much of his work continues to be read and celebrated today.
