Only the Icelandic wilderness itself can tell the tale of the various tragic events that have taken place there. It has claimed the lives of many over the centuries and even today people die from exposure to the elements. One of the most famous and, at the same time, most mysterious stories is that of the brothers from Reynistaður, who died from exposure on the Kjölur trail whilst making their way home after purchasing some livestock in the year 1780.
No one knows for certain what happened but most people were appalled by the fact that the bodies of the two brothers disappeared from the tent in which they lay and that the only remains of the leader of the expedition south was a solitary disembodied hand.
Kjölur was thought to be haunted after these events and people stopped using this once much traveled trail for more than a hundred years.
