Mukhtasar Minhaj Al-Qasidin (Towards the Hereafter) is one of the most accessible and practical guides to Islamic spirituality, offering readers a clear roadmap to spiritual purification and closeness to Allah. Authored by Imam Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah Al-Maqdisi (d. 620 AH/1223 CE), a leading scholar of the Hanbali school, this work distills centuries of spiritual insight into a single, systematic volume.
This spiritual classic carries a distinguished scholarly lineage. Ibn Qudamah refined Ibn al-Jawzi’s Minhaj al-Qasidin, which itself was a careful revision of Imam al-Ghazali’s monumental Ihya’ Ulum al-Din. While al-Ghazali’s original included narrations of varying authenticity, Ibn al-Jawzi authenticated them, and Ibn Qudamah further condensed the material while adding his own valuable insights. The result is a text that unites spiritual depth with reliable hadith—a rare harmony in Islamic literature.
The book is organised around four foundational pillars that together encompass the full spectrum of a Muslim’s spiritual life:
Acts of Worship explores the inner dimensions of prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, Qur’anic recitation, and remembrance of Allah, showing how outward practices nurture inward transformation.
Customs examines the spiritual ethics of everyday living—eating, marriage, earning livelihood, friendship, and social responsibilities—illustrating how ordinary actions become worship when guided by sincere intention.
Destructive Flaws delves into spiritual diseases such as anger, envy, pride, ostentation, greed, and harmful speech, offering practical cures drawn from the Qur’an, Hadith, and the insights of the righteous.
Means of Salvation concludes with uplifting chapters on repentance, patience, gratitude, hope, fear, asceticism, trust in Allah, divine love, sincerity, self-examination, contemplation, and remembrance of death—each a tool for the seeker’s path to spiritual excellence.
What truly distinguishes this work is its practical relevance. Ibn Qudamah does not merely discuss spiritual states; he provides concrete steps to attain them. Each chapter blends theological depth with actionable guidance, making profound concepts accessible to readers at every level.
This translation by Wa'il A. Shihab presents Ibn Qudamah’s classical Arabic in clear, contemporary English while preserving the work’s scholarly integrity. Helpful notes offer essential background for modern readers without disrupting the text’s flow.
Mukhtasar Minhaj Al-Qasidin speaks to the universal longing for meaning and connection with the Divine, offering timeless wisdom for navigating both spiritual aspirations and the challenges of daily life.
