Romancing Antigone

The Oracle named her the Harbinger of Death, so she set her betrothed free, and he crossed Greece to bring her home anyway.

Antigone of Thebes buried her mother, followed her blinded father into exile, and buried him too. The Oracle at Delphi calls her a monster and the child of incest, so she ended her betrothal to keep the one man she loves clear of her family's ruin. Then he walks into her room in Athens on the night of her father's funeral.

Haemon has kept every vow. He refused two dozen brides his father chose. He built the farmhouse from the lists she left behind and planted her mother's flowers in rows. He wants one thing, and it is Antigone beside him while her brothers march on each other for their father's throne and his own father schemes to take it from them both.

She goes home with him. Within days her brothers kill each other at the second gate, Creon claims the crown, and the new king orders one brother left unburied in the dirt. Antigone walks onto that field with coins for the boatman and defies him in front of the whole city.

Creon sentences her to death. Then comes the army. Then the witch who wants the blood of her unborn child. Then a prophecy she refuses to believe. Haemon will bring Thebes down before he loses her, and Antigone still needs three words he has never said.

Antigone lives. Haemon lives. They marry, and the last page belongs to the two of them. If you have skipped every retelling because you already know how the tragedy ends, this is the one written for you.
