#1 On October 5, 2016, a flight attendant on a South Korean airline evacuated all the passengers and crew members after a man’s new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone began smoking. The device had been exchanged two weeks before the flight.

#2 The most disturbing part of this is that Klering’s phone caught fire on Tuesday, one day before the Southwest flight, and Samsung knew about it and didn’t say anything.

#3 The crisis grew as customers continued to send in their faulty Galaxy Note 7s, and Samsung had no clear plan of action. Their reputation was falling apart, and they were completely oblivious to it.

#4 I first settled in South Korea in September 2009. I lived there until the fall of 2016, between reporting stints in Vietnam and Cambodia. I was immediately fascinated by my new home.
