Book Preview:

#1 I was driving past two girls standing by the side of the road in Maine, who asked me to take them to Augusta. They were smoking pot, and I thought about the fact that my purse was on the floor in the back next to Green Hair.

#2 The author met with Ashley LaPierre, who had come into the office to talk about a paper she was trying to write on The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. She spoke with a feminine-inflected voice that made every statement sound like a question.

#3 I had to get up to Colby by early afternoon to meet the Russos for dinner, then introduce Richard at the reading he was giving at the college that night. His new book, Empire Falls, had come out the previous summer.

#4 I was excited to meet Russo that evening. I knew the reading would be packed, and everyone knew that Rick had been my closest friend back when I was a man. As a writer, and as a man, Russo was a tough guy.
