#1 When a loved one commits suicide, it leaves a wound that never heals. The family bank account is usually empty, since my father’s once-pristine 1955 Buick Skylark, purchased with the proceeds from the sale of our suburban Boston house, had depreciated immediately after he drove it out of the dealership’s lot.

#2 I was determined to never end up like my father, who died of suicide. I was not going to die poor and sick, and I was determined to have a successful life.

#3 I was an Army officer-cadet with barely $1,000 in savings. I was living a senior-executive lifestyle, but I never discussed my fears, anxieties, or vulnerabilities. I was half-hearted about my healing. Around the time my mother required open-heart surgery, my seventy-five-year-old mother suffered a post-surgical stroke.

#4 I was told that my mother had been telling stories as she was regaining her memory. She told me that my father was not my biological father. I began to search for my genealogical roots.
