As the ship drifts into stranger and stranger waters, the vanishings begin, and it becomes clear that the Mortzestus has crossed into something no compass can chart. Published in 1909, William Hope Hodgson drew on his own years at sea to write one of the eeriest maritime horror novels of the early twentieth century, building dread not through gore but through the sheer, suffocating wrongness of a ship no longer entirely of this world.
