The Monster

Edgar Saltus's "The Monster" delves into the psychological intricacies of obsession and obsession's transformative power, intertwining elements of Gothic literature with a distinctly modern sensibility. The novel presents a richly textured narrative that explores the titular monster not merely as a metaphor for physical deformity but as a reflection of society's moral decay and the grotesque nature of unbridled desire. Saltus's prose is characterized by its lush verbosity, reminiscent of the decadent movement, and challenges readers to confront the underlying fears and fascinations of human nature within the context of late 19th-century America. Saltus, a prominent figure in fin-de-siècle literature, often grappled with themes of existentialism and the darker facets of human experience. His unique upbringing and exposure to German philosophy likely influenced his exploration of the tensions between beauty, monstrosity, and societal norms. With his background as a writer who flitted between various cultural influences, Saltus's works reflect a keen awareness of the philosophical currents of his time, culminating in the intricate character studies found in "The Monster." This compelling work invites readers to immerse themselves in the haunting narrative of self-destruction and transformation. Recommended for those intrigued by psychological explorations and the interplay of aestheticism and morality, "The Monster" serves as a profound commentary on the nature of humanity and the monsters that dwell within.
