Wrong Date for Mardi Gras

Nadia is twenty-three, with a credit card that never runs out and nothing on her calendar that means anything. Her sister is expecting a baby. Her four older brothers have families of their own. She has friends who drag her to New Orleans for the parades and a pink silk mask she puts on because arguing costs more energy than agreeing. Then she sits down beside a stranger in a black mask, and he calls her princess like he has said it before.

Bill sold tacos from a stand on campus while he loved her from four feet away. She rejected him once. He took a job in finance with her uncle, worked himself into money she cannot count, and flew into town for a friend's bachelor party knowing she might be here. He has spent years becoming a man worth her yes.

One night of masks, champagne and a rooftop gives them back everything they lost. Morning brings the harder problem. He wants the rest of her life. She cannot name one thing she is good for, and she will not let him marry a woman she considers worthless.
