Mr. Nair explains how several South Indian states, where Hindi is not widely spoken, may not be able to understand the names of these Bills. He also refers to remarks made by former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who criticized the Modi government’s move, saying: “Non-Hindi-speaking people cannot identify a Bill or Act with titles that are in Hindi words written in English letters, nor can they pronounce the title of the Bill or Act. Successive governments have reiterated the promise that English will remain an Associate Official Language. I fear that promise is in danger of being broken.”

Last week, hundreds of village women, armed with lathis, farming tools, and brooms, took to the streets, demanding the arrest of three local TMC leaders – Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibaprasad Hazra, and Uttam Sardar. The police announced on Saturday that charges, including gang rape, have been filed against the latter two. Hazra was apprehended late Saturday night from the Nazat area in North 24 Parganas and is scheduled to appear before the Basirhat court on February 18.
