Our Wives Under The Sea is the debut novel from the critically acclaimed author of Salt Slow. It’s a story of falling in love, loss, grief, and what life there is in the deep, deep sea.
Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. It soon becomes clear, though, that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home.
To have the woman she loves back should mean a return to normal life, but Miri can feel Leah slipping from her grasp. Memories of what they had before – the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers – only remind Miri of what she stands to lose. Living in the same space but suddenly separate, Miri comes to realize that the life that they had might be gone.
'Part bruisingly tender love story, part nerve-clanging submarine thriller . . . heart-slicing, cinematic.' - The Times

Mysterious and beautiful. Slow pace that fits the reflecting nature of the book. Wonderful story about human relationships and grief.

This was not what I’d expected. It’s definitely not a horror book but literary fiction and as such I would have preferred to have read it myself instead of listening to it. It’s a slow burn and the narration made it often quite boring. May read it again in the future but in physical format.

If you don’t like open endings and questions that do not get answered, this book is not for you. It’s sad, about grief, at times nauseatingly tense, slow but also captivating. Don’t know if I would recommend. The narrator has a beautiful voice and style of speaking, very nice accent. Loved the queer representation!!!

This story goes deep, with many layers like the ocean. Modern and not cliché, though for a moment you might have thought this was a diluted le Guin it prooves itself worth your attention as a superior examination of grief and loss by brave women - more I can't say without spoilers. Be inspired to live in the moment as you enjoy this book like a mystery novel.

I thought this was going to be a spooky book but twasna. I wouldn’t necessarily classify it as boring but that was the closest to what it was. I wasn’t convinced by it, felt no connection to the characters, expected more.
