Nicomachean Ethics (Annotated): Enriched Edition. Virtue Ethics, Eudaimonia, Practical Wisdom, and the Ancient Art of Living Well

In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle offers the foundational account of virtue ethics: an inquiry into the human good, eudaimonia, and the disciplined formation of character. Written in the compact, analytic style of lecture materials, the work moves from happiness and moral virtue to deliberation, justice, friendship, pleasure, and contemplation. Situated after Plato yet distinct from him, it grounds ethics not in abstract forms but in practical reason, habituation, and the mean between excess and deficiency. Aristotle, born in Stagira in 384 BCE, studied in Plato's Academy before tutoring Alexander of Macedon and founding the Lyceum in Athens. His biological, political, and logical investigations shaped his ethical method: he observes human practices, classifies their ends, and asks what kind of life fulfills our nature. The title likely reflects association with his son or editor, Nicomachus. This book is indispensable for readers of philosophy, classics, theology, political theory, and moral psychology. It rewards slow reading, not as a manual of rules, but as a profound education in judgment, character, friendship, and the difficult art of living well.
