OpenHands: Building Task‑Executing Agents for Real Repos, Tickets, and Toolchains

"OpenHands: Building Task‑Executing Agents for Real Repos, Tickets, and Toolchains"

Software engineering agents become interesting only when they stop talking about work and start doing it. This book is for experienced developers, platform engineers, AI engineers, and technical leaders who want to understand how OpenHands operates as a real execution platform across repositories, issues, pull requests, sandboxes, and external tools. Rather than treating agentic coding as a novelty, it examines the concrete mechanics required to make task execution trustworthy, reviewable, and operationally useful.

Across the book, readers build a rigorous mental model of task-executing agents: how they plan, act, observe, and iterate inside repository workspaces; how runtime isolation and sandbox architecture shape behavior; how model and agent configuration affect reliability; and how MCP extends OpenHands into broader toolchains. The book also follows the most consequential production workflow end to end, from GitHub issue intake to pull-request creation, while addressing permissions, identity, auditability, evaluation, failure modes, and staged autonomy for real organizational adoption.

Designed as a deep technical guide rather than a beginner introduction, the book assumes comfort with modern software delivery, source control, terminal workflows, and API-driven tooling. Its distinguishing focus is operational realism: not abstract prompt advice, but the systems, constraints, and governance patterns that determine whether autonomous software work can succeed in production.
