The Knights

In The Knights, the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes delivers a biting political satire targeting the demagogue Cleon, one of the most powerful figures in Athenian politics. Written during the Peloponnesian War, the play follows a group of slaves who conspire to overthrow a corrupt and blustery war profiteer—a transparent stand-in for Cleon—who has gained control over the city-state and manipulates the people for personal gain. With bold humor, clever dialogue, and typical Aristophanic irreverence, the play critiques greed, demagoguery, and the decline of democratic integrity. Featuring a grotesque yet brilliant mix of slapstick, fantasy, and pointed social commentary, The Knights showcases Aristophanes’ talent for using comedy as a weapon against political abuse and civic complacency. It remains a sharp reflection on power, corruption, and the responsibilities of citizenship in times of crisis.
