Written and experienced in the face of certain death. Of Scott's bravado and courage there is no doubt. The Empire's righteousness was never questioned by him, tragically, to the detriment of the anonymous men on the voyage who did not gain glory in death. The narrator imitates the tones, values of speech sound of 100 years ago. However the rolling cadence and theatrical voice distract from the context. The exaggeratedly formal narrative tone is irritating. Did Scott intend.that his diary be a public proclamation of his service to the Empire?
