#1 Alice was born in 1901 in a small town in France. Her parents were poor, and her mother was sent to work at a hospital in Paris, leaving Alice to be raised by her aunts. Her mother, Marie, sent home five francs a month. When she was older, Alice went to the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for helpings of vegetable broth and rice.
