Novelizing history is a dangerous game. Done badly, it can be tacky, cheesy, and – at very worst – offensive. Warping historical context to create a compelling story risks misrepresenting real human experience. The best historical fiction writers are able to deftly maneuver within the strict timelines given to them and use real people and real stories to bolster the narrative. In her novel The Alice Network, Kate Quinn has taken history and, with only minor adjustments and additions, woven a beautifully moving story about war, friendship, and the lasting effects of trauma on the human psyche. Told in alternating points of view between Charlotte’s present day search and Eve’s introduction to secret intelligence in the First World War, The Alice Network explores the total destruction of war, the strength of women, and the unbelievable lengths human beings will go to in times of chaos to protect those they love.

En strålande bra bok. Handlar om tuffa saker. Har själv besökt Ouradour sur Glane. De har behållit den som den tomma spökstad den blev då alla invånare mördades. En ny Ouradour har växt upp vid sidan om. Och den gamla orten har blivit en plats dit man åker för att minnas krigets fasor, ungefär som koncentrationslägren. Kyrkan, dit människorna flydde för att få fristad, är helt pepprad med kulhål på innerväggarna. Brutalt.Och jag blir lycklig av en så otroligt skicklig inläsare!! Hon får det att låta så lätt att återge samtal mellan en brittiska, en skotte och en amerikanska med perfekt uttal av deras respektive språk. Hon har ett riktigt bra uttal på franska ( vilket inte är vanligt bland engelsktalande). Och dessutom stammar hon fullkomligt övertygande. Vilket mästerverk!

I loved this book because the two story lines in two different times blended very well. Loved the characters, very well written. Exciting, intens and at times moving.

Such an incredible book this is and a great story stays behind it. Unfortunately this narrated version has no author's afterword, which tells all about the characters of the real story, whom writer has introduced into their piece.
