One of the foundational philosophies of Gestalt therapy is the concept of "here and now" awareness. The therapy emphasizes the importance of the present moment, encouraging clients to focus on what is happening in the current moment rather than becoming preoccupied with past events or future anxieties. By exploring their immediate thoughts, feelings, and sensations, clients are able to increase their awareness of themselves and their behavior patterns. This heightened awareness allows them to make more conscious choices and break free from unconscious habits or unresolved issues. The emphasis on the "here and now" fosters a sense of immediacy and engagement, creating a dynamic therapeutic experience that is focused on active interaction between the therapist and the client.
