Killing Imaginary Friends

What does a boy do when his imaginary friends never die? Oliver (Olly) Frampton fights back his parting tears. It’s all his fault they fought. He stares into the blackness, terrified his mother will careen off the mountain at any moment in the storm. Ahead, police lights streak through the sky. An officer in a yellow slicer waves them slowly past an overturned car.

Olly presses his nose against the rain-streaked window. A small boy clutching his teddy stares up at him before disappearing beneath a ghostly white sheet. Olly can smell his fear for that poor little guy, all alone. His fear turns to profound sadness. What could he do? A small voice makes his head spin and his eyes bulge. Hugging his soggy teddy, the boy smiles from the seat beside him.

Staring into the rearview mirror, panic grips Olly’s throat. Didn’t she hear him? Can’t she see him?
