Herbert Russell Wakefield was born in Sandgate, Kent in 1888, the third of four children.

He was educated at Marlborough College and Oxford and was a noted player in cricket, golf and football.

During World War 1 he served as a Captain in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Subsequently he became the chief editor at the book publisher William Collins.

His own literary career, as a master of supernatural fiction, was heavily influenced by M R James and Algernon Blackwood.

He wrote several short story collections as well as true crime studies and detective novels.

With his popularity declining and literary recognition fading he destroyed many of his manuscripts ands much of his correspondence before he died.

Herbert Russell Wakefield died on the 2nd August 1964.
