#1 I was born in Altamonte Springs, Florida, a suburb of Orlando. I grew up with two loving parents, but we didn’t have a particularly stable home life. My parents’ choices in men weren’t the best. When I was four, my mother met a man named Mike who was visiting from Colorado. Their connection was so strong that Mike immediately made the pitch for my mother to visit him when he got back to Colorado.

#2 I was a little kid who didn’t understand why things were changing so quickly. I was moving from Florida to Colorado with my mother, who was dating a man named Mike. It wasn’t a fun adventure.

#3 I had a very unhappy childhood. My mother, who was a single parent, made a terrible decision to stay with my abusive father. She was afraid of him, and her concern for both my and her own safety kept her from leaving.
