#1 I had been depressed for several years, and I hadn’t taken any steps to get help. One day, I saw a post on social media from a high school friend who had begun running. I was shocked by the joy in her posts, and I began to wonder if running could be the solution to my depression.
#2 I tried running, and although I was able to do it for 60 seconds, my deep animal instinct tried to protect me by scoffing at the idea of me actually doing it. I was old and fat, and people would make fun of me if they saw me try to run.
#3 I had given up running so many times before, but this time was different. I had finally done it. I had run. It had been a long time since I’d sweated from exertion, and the sweat made me smile.
#4 I spent the next day at a coffeehouse working on the novel I was revising. I did not tell anyone about my weight loss plan, because I didn’t want anyone to get their hopes up. I was guarding my own hopes.
