Rome has long since fallen; the legions have retreated. A Gothic overlord, Theoderic the Great, is master of Italy. He is an Arian - a heretic to most - but a tolerant monarch whose stature as a leader is unquestioned. Yet in later years, his anger bares down upon those he honored most.

A Roman Briton of ancient lineage is befriended by the Gothic King and also by Boethius, the greatest Roman of his day and one much honored until the King destroys him. Caught between two loyalties, the Briton is in peril but he has well-placed friends both in Italy and in the Eastern capital, Constantinople.

Other powerful figures also occupy the stage: Benedict of Nursia, founder of the Benedictine order, Clovis, King of the Franks, and Justinian the Great.
