The Red Hand

A severed hand. A strange poison. The occult history of a hidden, savage race.

In this classic tale of dark folklore and mystery, Dyson (a recurring detective figure in Machen's fiction) investigates a chilling and baffling series of events in rural Wales. The mystery begins with the discovery of a severed human hand found in a field near an ancient stone circle. The hand is not merely a gruesome piece of evidence; it bears strange, unusual physical characteristics and is marked by an unnerving discoloration.

Dyson's investigation leads him to connect this macabre find with the unsettling history of the region.

The Red Hand is a masterful example of Arthur Machen's genius for finding the sublime and terrifying in the mundane. It transforms a simple country walk into a confrontation with the brutal, enduring savagery of the human past, suggesting that the most horrifying crimes are not modern inventions, but the result of the earth's ancient, dark inhabitants reclaiming their power.
