#1 The shadow is the part of our personality that we don’t like, and it is typically the part that is most opposed to our ego. It is what makes us human, as it is what makes us imperfect.

#2 The shadow is the part of the unconscious that is closest to consciousness, and it is the most denied expression. It is a relatively separate splinter personality in the unconscious that is isolated from exposure and discovery.

#3 The shadow is the part of us that we don’t want to see. It is the disowned self, a holding buffer that contains our unacceptable parts. It becomes a holding buffer as we grow up, and we drag it behind us as we grow up.

#4 The shadow is the whole unconscious, and it takes on a personal form once we begin to develop awareness of parts of it. It is through the process of shadow-work that we eventually gain a profound understanding of who we are.
