In the first part of the novel, Balfour attempts to gain justice for James Stewart, who has been arrested and charged with complicity in the Appin Murder. Another kidnapping, however, foils his plans. Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850 - 1894) was a famous Scottish essayist, novelist, poet, and travel writer.
