#1 Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our Church. It is the principle of grace as a doctrine, a principle, and a system. It means forgiveness of sins proclaimed as a general truth, and the love of God taught as the Christian conception of God.

#2 Cheap grace is the justification of sin without the justification of the repentant sinner. It is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, and absolution without personal confession.

#3 Costly grace is the Incarnation of God. It is costly because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner.

#4 The Church of Rome was able to tolerate the monastic movement, and even use it to justify the secularization of its own life. Monasticism was thus a living protest against the Church’s secularization, but the Church was able to limit the application of the commandments of Jesus to a restricted group of specialists.
