The Willows

Two friends. One canoe. A long trip down the Danube into a vast, whispering wilderness of willows and shifting water.

It should be the adventure of a lifetime. Instead, as they pitch camp on a small sandy island, something begins to feel wrong. The willows move when there is no wind. Shapes pass overhead in the dark. And slowly, terribly, the two men come to suspect they have wandered into a place where humans were never meant to be – and that something vast and ancient has noticed them.

First published in 1907, The Willows is widely considered one of the greatest weird tales ever written. H. P. Lovecraft called it the finest supernatural story in the English language, and its long shadow falls across cosmic horror and folk horror to this day. Algernon Blackwood doesn't bother with monsters or jump scares. He does something far stranger: he makes the landscape itself feel wrong.
