Y si la narración denuncia el caos y la arbitrariedad de las instituciones en Méjico, el retrato del protagonista y de su mujer, la temible Guadalupe, mujer de carácter que ha hecho la guerra con su marido, nos ofrece una mirada divertida pero descarnada a los protagonistas de un tiempo convulso.

Illiterate, megalomaniac and dominated by his wife, Doroteo Martínez's rise to power reflects the drift of the revolutionary movements so common in the early history of the Mexican Republic. And if the author denounces the chaos and arbitrariness of Mexico's institutions, the portrait of the protagonist and his wife, the fearsome Guadalupe, a woman of character who has gone to war with her husband, offers an amusing but stark look at the protagonists of a convulsive time.
