In 1963, Annie Ernaux, twenty-three and unattached, realizes she is pregnant. Shame arises in her like a plague: Understanding that her pregnancy will mark her and her family as social failures, she knows she cannot keep the child. In a France where abortion was illegal, she attempted, in vain, to self-administer the abortion with a knitting needle. Fearful and desperate, she finally located an abortionist and ended up in a hospital emergency ward where she nearly died. In Happening, Ernaux sifts through her memories and her journal entries dating from those days. Clearly, cleanly, she gleans the meanings of her experience.

A heartbreaking and raw story - I had to read the whole book in one sitting. Ernaux is a masterful writer who is truly able to communicate complex ideas and emotions in a way that is both accessible and deeply moving. "Happening" highlights the ongoing issues of gender inequality, power imbalances, and institutional failures that continue to impact individuals' lives. I think this book provides a powerful reminder of the importance of challenging these issues and working towards a more just and equitable society. "Happening" also provides a powerful example of the ways in which trauma, memory, and power can impact a person's life trajectory and sense of self.Ernaux writes with a raw honesty that is both brave and vulnerable. She is unflinching in her exploration of difficult themes such as trauma, shame, and power dynamics, and this honesty is both compelling and moving. And I think she uses a clear, simple language that is accessible to all readers
